Assembly Line Boot Camp - Week 6: Frames

This week's theme is Frames, and I got a LOT done by matting my photos and trying to incorporate some unique frames this week. Club Scrap Blog Hop - Big Deal

Hi there!  Welcome to the Big Deal blog hop! This month we're using Club Scrap's Big Deal collection.  I'm going to show you how I used the paper and digital kits to (partially) create a fun project for your photos!

When the sneaks for this kit were revealed in January, my mind immediately began thinking of something I could do within the theme of games and cards.  I first created a Pinterest mood board to help get the ideas rolling:

I was thinking of creating a mini album out of old playing cards, but then Club Scrap had this wonderful idea of supplying a kit with a blank deck of cards for decorating with, so I decided to try a different idea.

This month was the first time I delved into the digital/hybrid world!  So exciting.  I used the Big Deal digital kit and some yummy papers from the collection to create my own playing cards and a handy box to house them in!

To create the cards, I created a template in Photoshop to resize the photos I wanted to use, then dropped the digital stamps for the numbers and suit symbols on top of the photos.  I then printed the photos, attached them to cardstock that I had printed some digital elements on to, and I have my playing cards!

You may notice that my suit of hearts are not quite the color you would expect (ie. red).  I showed my boyfriend the finished product (only the suit of hearts so far) and he said, "Aren't the hearts supposed to be red?"  This was pretty much my reaction:

So yeah, I may have given up after that point since I had already procrastinated enough and did not have the energy to start over, so I made the box instead.  I used and modified the instructions Tricia had provided in this post for her business card holder.  I cut a 7x10 inch piece of the yellow paper, scored it vertically at 1.25", 2.25", 4.75" and 5.75", then scored it horizontally at 3.5", 4.5", 8" and 9".  After I assembled it according to her instructions, I added some red pearl panels and edged the whole thing with brown ink.

So there you have it - a partially completed deck.  I'm still liking the idea of making my own cards, so I think I'm going to redo this suit in the correct color and then make the 3 remaining suits.  I'm also going to laminate the cards so they don't come apart from their backing and that might help with durability.  Check back in and I hope to have the completed project soon!

Bokeh Technique Card

Happy snow day to you all!  I don't know about you, but it is cold and snowy here!  Thankfully my company let us work from home this afternoon since the roads were getting so bad, and I had a chance to make this card after all my emails were taken care of.

I used the technique shown here at the Club Scrap Creates blog, and I had so much fun!  You can see it got a little messy, but next time I'll make sure not to get excess ink on my acrylic stamping blocks.  Instead of a stamp, I used my electronic die cutting machine to cut out a birthday cake image and used that as a mask.  I also inked up the sentiment with three ink colors (yellow, pink, and blue) and got this awesome rainbow effect!  Love it!  Just remember when mixing ink pads on the same stamp to ink from light to dark.

I think it's a bright and cheery card for a white winter day!

Club Scrap Blog Hop - Graffiti

Hi there!  Welcome to the first Club Scrap blog hop of 2014!  This January we're creating with the bright and trendy Graffiti collection.  I'm going to show you how I used the vivid papers in this kit to complete a project I had in my mind for a long time!

One of the first things I did when this kit was revealed was to make my own mood board on Pinterest.  I used the colors and themes in the kit to search for pins that would help me get inspired to use this kit creatively.

This helped me to gather ideas for this month's blog hop and is something I will reference when I'm using elements of this kit later down the road.

I knew I wanted to make a project this month so I pulled out my package of chipboard die-cut states shapes, a few sheets of the amazing colored paper (that I ordered extra of), and got to work:

Oh yeah, I thought it was a brilliant idea to cover those die cuts with paper and then recut them out.  Took no time at all...

What I did think was brilliant was that I was originally going to adhere these to a plain piece of paper, then, thanks to my mood board, decided to mount these shapes on Club Scrap black colossal paper (thanks Marie for the paper!) and do a chalkboard technique to go along with the chalkboard elements of the kit.

Thanks to some white pigment ink, some stamps from Graffiti and white embossing powder, and my trusty colored pencils, I think I was able to pull the chalkboard elements together.  I really like how the bright colors of the paper stand out more against the dark background.  (And these pictures do not do these papers justice - the blue and green are amazing metallic papers, and the other colors are so vibrant - I can't wait to use these on other projects.)

The great thing about these diecuts is that they were made to fit together like a puzzle, so I did not have too bad of a time putting these together at the end.  If you don't want to use diecuts, this would be a perfect excuse to use your electronic cutting machine to end up with the same results.

I decided to add some lettering at the end, and I'm pretty happy with the hand-drawn look I was able to accomplish - all the thanks to stamps and a stencil!  I used the font stamps from Mirror, Mirror for the lettering, and I used the Freedom banner stencil to add in the waving banner.  Taking inspiration from this pin, I added in some hand-drawn details with a white colored pencil, the 3-D opaque pen that was included in my Lite kit, and made the letters pop by coloring them in with bright colored pencils.  I'm really pleased that the texture of the paper can be seen through the coloring - it really helps with the chalkboard look, don't you think?
